Murchison falls national park is Uganda’s largest and biggest conservation area home to 76 species of mammals and 451 bird species. The park is bisected by the striking river Nile the largest river in Africa with splendid waterfalls flowing to the great Lake Albert. The park is known for its famous magnificent falls (Murchison) During idi Amin dada reign in the 1970s the name of the park was changed to kabalega falls named after the king Omukama of Bunyoro Kitara kingdom Kabalega however after his down fall, the parks name was changed back to Murchison.

Time Table for Ferry Crossing

Murchison falls national park is endowed with animals like elephants, leopards, antelopes, oribi, warthogs, lions, impala, baboon, giraffes among others. Its accommodation is with in the park and most times in order to see most game at the northern bank one has to cross the Nile, there is a scheduled ferry that enables you to cross from south to north, the ferry carries a maximum number of six cars per trip. Crossing takes place all day beginning from 7:00am to 7:00pm scheduled as 7am, 9:00am, 11:00am, 12:00noon, 2:00pm ,6:00pm and 7:00pm local time It costs 5,000ug shillings, for passengers, motorcycles and light vehicles 20,000shillings or above depending on the type of car special crossings can be organized at a different fare compared to the normal fees charged.

Ferry crossing makes it easy to cross and participate in the parks activities like game drives, nature walks, birding, fishing, chimpanzee tracking, research among others and to have a beautiful tour all throughout the park in both sections the north and the southern banks of the Nile other parts inclusive.

The park is located in northern Uganda approximately 5 hours’ drive from Kampala and many visitors prefer a stopover in Nakasongola at the Ziwa rhino sanctuary for Rhino tracking to add on adventure to the northern Uganda, chatter flights can be organized in Entebbe to the parks airstrip of Kampala-Kajansi. A lot of accommodation is available with in the park ranging from luxury to budget for example Chobe safari lodge, Pakuba safari lodge, Bakers lodge, Fort Murchison lodge, Murchison river lodge among others.
