Mgahinga gorilla national park is the smallest of the national parks in Uganda. Its located in the south western part of the country in kisoro district. The park was gazetted in 1991 after being declared a game sanctuary by the British administration and it covers an area of about 33.7km2.it takes its name from Gahinga which is a local word for the piles of volcanic stones cleared from farm land at the foot of the volcanoes.it was created to protect mountain gorillas that roam from Virunga national park in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
