Lake Bunyonyi is Africa’s second-deepest lake, boasting some 900 m in depth, 25 km in length, 7km in width, and 29 islands, including the infamous Akampene punishment island”, wherein in the ancient past, girls who fell pregnant out of wedlock were hurled to their deaths. Away from that dark past, this archipelago of islands evokes a history richer than barbaric atrocities.
Some of the wildlife native to this paradise includes, but is not limited to, the DeWitte’s clawed frog, the Lake Victoria clawed frog, the African clawless otter, and the spotted-necked otter. Four species of Caridina shrimp also live in this lake. Other fish species like the Nile tilapia, the Singida tilapia, and the red swampy crayfish have been introduced. Lake Bunyonyi is a hot spot for tourism, blessed with around 200 species of birds, including waterbirds and migratory birds.
